The Internet: It's Not Magic, It's Just Really Long Wires! How the Internet works

Ever wondered how the Internet truly works? In this beginner-friendly guide, we break down the complex world of servers, IP addresses, and undersea cables into simple, easy-to-understand terms. It’s not magic it's an incredible network of wires connecting the world.

The Internet: It's Not Magic, It's Just Really Long Wires! How the Internet works

Ever wondered how you can watch videos or chat with your friends who live far away? It's all thanks to something called the Internet.

A lot of people might tell you it's super complicated, like a "cloud" floating in the sky. But guess what? The Internet is actually pretty simple, like a giant game of telephone using wires!

Imagine you have two toy cans connected by a long string. If you talk into one can, your friend on the other end can hear you, right?

That's kind of how the Internet works! Instead of a string and cans, it uses really long wires (some even under the sea!) to connect computers all over the world. So, a computer in Abuja can "talk" to a computer in America through these amazing wires.

Meet the Super-Helpful Computers: Servers 🦸‍♂️

Now, some special computers on the Internet have a very important job. They are like super-organized librarians that are open all day and all night. These computers are called servers.

internet2

Think of a web server as a giant library that holds all the information for websites, like pictures, videos, and words. When you want to see a website like Igatehub.com, you're basically telling this library, "Hey, can I see the IgateHub website, please?" And the server finds all the pieces and sends them to you so you can see the website on your phone or computer.

Your Computer is a Client 🧍‍♀️🧍‍♂️

The computer or phone that you use to look at websites is called a client. It's like you visiting the library to borrow a book (which in this case is a website).

Finding the Right Library: The DNS Phone Book 📞

Now, imagine this giant library has so many websites, it would take forever to find the one you want just by wandering around. That's where something cool called a DNS server comes in.

When you type a website name like igatehub.com, your computer asks your ISP (Internet Service Provider) – that's the company you pay for internet access, like MTN or Airtel in Nigeria – to help find it.

internet4

The ISP then asks a DNS server, which is like a super-smart phone book for the internet. Every website has a special number address called an IP address (like a postal code for computers!). The DNS server looks up the website name (igatehub.com) and finds its exact IP address.

Once the DNS finds the number, it tells your computer (through your ISP), "The igateHub library is at this number!" Then, your computer can directly ask the igateHub servers at that number to send you the igatehub homepage.

You can even try this yourself! There are websites like nslookup.io where you can type a website name and see its secret number address!

Wires Under the Sea! 🌊🐠

You might be thinking, "But what about talking to computers in other countries separated by big oceans?" Well, guess what? There are HUGE wires called undersea cables that run along the bottom of the ocean, connecting continents!

internet5

These cables are amazing! They have hundreds of tiny strands of glass called fiber optic cables inside them. These strands use super-fast laser light to send information at incredible speeds – up to 400 gigabytes every single second!

So, when you click a button on a website, tiny signals of electricity travel through these underwater and above-ground wires, all guided by those secret IP addresses. It's like sending a super-fast message in a bottle through a giant network of tubes!

Isn't it amazing that in just a blink of an eye, we can see our favorite websites thanks to these tiny signals traveling all around the world? That's how awesome the Internet is!

Here at IgateHub, we use this amazing Internet to build cool websites and apps for businesses right here in Nigeria and all over. We understand how these wires and servers work, and we use that knowledge to help our clients succeed online!
